Unsafe & Safe Treats When Wearing Braces
If you have braces and a sweet tooth, times may be tough. However, there is no real reason to fret. It’s true that some treats cannot be enjoyed with braces, but there are many sweet treats and snacks that are safe for you to enjoy. Our orthodontist and team can go over safe and unsafe treats when wearing braces in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Unsafe Sweet Treats
When shopping for sweet treats, steer clear of those that are hard, chewy or sticky. Some specific treats to avoid include licorice, caramel, gum, suckers, and taffy. These snacks could bend or break your brackets and wires.
Safe Sweet Treats
We suggest that you stick to safe snacks, like soft foods. Chocolate, peanut butter, milkshakes, ice cream, and gelatin-based candies are all safe and tasty options. If you want a healthier sweet snack, consider fruit. Berries like strawberries and raspberries are great choices, as they are soft. Hard fruits like apples should be cut into thin slices so that they can be safely eaten with your braces. After you consume something sugary or sweet, be sure to rinse out your mouth with water or brush your teeth. This can help protect both your teeth and your braces.
