Minor deviations in your dentition can potentially be corrected by some form of orthodontic braces. This could come in the form of traditional metal bracket and wire braces or clear plastic braces like Invisalign®.

Even after your teeth have been fully corrected you will still need to take measures to preserve the alignment of your teeth. There will still be some tension lingering in the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in the sockets. If it’s not addressed by using a retainer, it could allow your teeth to gradually drift out of their intended position.

If your teeth only needed a minor amount of realignment, Dr. Michael Bowen might be able to fit you for a clear plastic retainer. This simple mouthpiece is made from a clear plastic material, similar to Invisalign® aligner trays.

It’s important that you wear the retainer in your mouth at the necessary times. The total duration of your retention phase will likely be the same as the time it took to correct your smile with braces.

You can drink normally while you have the retainer in your mouth. However, you will need to take it out to prevent damage when eating. Any time you take it out of your mouth you should keep the clear plastic retainer in the case provided.

A gentle rinse in a mixture of half cold water and half antiseptic mouthwash can help clear away any plaque and food particles. If you notice some plaque buildup you can gently brush the unit with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little nonabrasive toothpaste.
